New York December reports Charles A. Belling of the Bronx National Bank is labeled insane by friends after one year of $5590 in auto joy ride bills. Belling faces Tombs charges for securing $25900 from many city banks with forged stock. His lawyer says he has acted oddly since childhood after a skull fracture.
In Memphis two federal agents and city detectives exchanged fire near a riverfront shanty boat as both sides mistook the other for whiskey thieves. Revenue collector T. H. Baker Sr. was seriously wounded when hit by a bullet fired by detective Thomas Skea.
Peace talks between 32 000 engineers of 61 western railroads and railroad managers paused in Chicago as U S labor commissioner Charles Neill fell ill. Without his mediation action is delayed at least two days, but the engineers threaten a Christmas strike if a settlement is not reached before week’s end. Warren S Stone says delay unlikely to alter resolve.
Washington Dec 20 A report exonerating Senator Lorimer charged with election by money was adopted by the senate committee on privileges and elections. Chairman Burrows will draft the report aligning with the subcommittee finding that no evidence tied Lorimer to money in his Illinois election. Burrows began work and hoped to finish that evening.
In Philadelphia on December 20 the United States circuit court of appeals ruled that railroads and related firms may not vote Temple Iron Company stock or participate in its management. The decree effectively forces the Temple Iron Company out of business, disrupting a key mechanism by which railroads controlling the anthracite region shape output.

The Dunn Ballot Committee met at the courthouse and canvassed ten voluntary petitions showing public support for the fraud-proof ballot. Of 313 signatures, 268 favored the ballot and 45 urged a second trial before final adoption. Paul W. Mahoney voiced voter opposition, challenging authority and noting no county frauds.
Police report three miners were shot by deputy sheriffs guarding Pittsburg Coal Company mines at Osborne near West Newton after a suspected assault by strikers. The deputies repelled the attack and reported the incident occurred early today.
