Detroit Board withholds federal grants over racial integration
The Detroit Board of Education delayed accepting a $90,000 federal grant for symphony concerts for 30,000 underprivileged children and a $3,750 grant for school opera for about 4,000 pupils citing racial integration concerns. Rev. Darneau Stewart objected that the orchestra and Piccolo Opera Co do not meet integration standards. Norman Drachler said no integration forms were requested as bidders. Robert Semple said qualified Negro musicians were scarce, while Everett Lee, a Black conductor, will lead regular concerts this week. Howard Harrington noted the orchestra will hire a Negro musician if qualified.
