President Truman will address the nation at 9 30 p m outlining necessary home front sacrifices to sustain free world military strength. A national emergency declaration to speed up contracts and move toward a war footing is anticipated with possible price and wage controls to follow.
The United States mapped sanctions on rail express matter with an embargo on all express shipments into and out of 15 states the District of Columbia and St. Louis due to the rail strike. Attorney General McGrath announced contempt proceedings against striking yard workers in Chicago and other key centers as court orders were already issued.
The auditorium committee in Minneapolis evaluated three firms in a four hour session to design the Mary Sawyer auditorium. A second interview with other firms is planned.
The government plans a new mobilization super agency to be headed by Charles E Wilson of General Electric. He would hold production control powers from the old War Production Board and much of War Mobilization authority, reporting directly to President Truman. The agency would absorb the National Production Authority staff and powers and handle expansion loans and tax relief for defense plants.

New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey called for immediate national mobilization to curb communist expansion. He urged universal military training, a 100 division U S Army, 80 group Air Force, full navy, general registration, pay as you go inflation controls, and an economic mobilizer to lead production and tax measures. He also proposed enlisting Allied forces and expanding taxes on profits and individuals to fund the defense effort.
A government commission in London accuses the British false teeth industry of strangling competition to keep prices high. It urges banning the trade restraints by law and targets the Association of Dental Manufacturers and Traders of the United Kingdom, which it says controls about 90 percent of the retail supply of dental goods.
The senate armed services committee voted 13 to 0 that communist charges against Mrs Ann M Rosenberg were completely without foundation. This clears the way for Senate confirmation of her as assistant secretary of defense in New York.
Chinese Communists launched rockets marked with English letters and numbers at U S troops in northwest Korea last month north of Pyongyang. The weapons resembled the American 3.5 bazooka and indicate enhanced cross border fire.
A series of sharp shakes struck Thursday at the Sierra Ordnance Depot in California. Residents fled homes as windows cracked and underground gas lines were damaged. No injuries were reported.
La Crosse State Teachers College football team bound for the Cigar bowl in Tampa, Florida, surpassed its $1,500 goal in a community drive. As of Friday, readers reported $1,548.40 raised, with donations continuing. The drive began Dec 4 after the team earned the bowl bid. Funds support 45 players and travel expenses, with several local businesses and individuals contributing.
State highway officials met with La Crosse and Trempealeau county committees to consider state aid for reconstructing the McGilvray bridge and the Black River bottoms road.
