The military seeks 80 000 draftees each in January and February, boosting total calls to 370 000 as defense officials push weapon procurement and hint at a national emergency, with Army losses and mobilization for a 1 2649 million strength target by next July.
Washington officials say the administration will ask Congress to authorize a new billion dollar defense housing program. The Housing and Home Finance Agency notes the legislation is being drafted and declines to specify the federal funding amount.

In Augusta Georgia June R Edwards is charged with murder after beating Mary Dean alias Mary Lee Groomes of Pearson with his plaster cast arm to force her into a taxi. Coroner Widener ordered the charge and set an inquest after detectives finish their investigation. Dean died Tuesday night in a hospital.

State highway officials will join La Crosse and Trempealeau counties in La Crosse on Friday at 1 30 p m in the courthouse to explore state aid for reopening McGilvray road over the Black River bottoms. Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. announced wage increases for about 31,000 employees in nine U.S. plants. Camp McCoy Wisconsin will grant three day passes to Army trainees for the Christmas and New Year weekends with two intervening four day periods. Col. Peter C. A four engined DC-4 from Switzerland to New York clipped a guide light pole at the reserve airport in Sydney Nova Scotia and skidded into a bog. Passengers and crew were saved with only minor injuries reported among the 31 aboard. The crash occurred in fog with the plane bursting into flames after safety evacuation. Authorities offered no immediate cause.
Edward J. Kelly longtime Chicago figure leaves estate valued around $600000 to his widow Margaret. Probate filed by Michael Mulcahy lists stocks bonds real estate incl Eagle River Wisconsin and Palm Springs California. Kelly served as Chicago mayor 1933 to 1937 and died October 20 from a heart ailment.
E P Hartl city recreation director issued a plea to children and adults to stay off the Lagoon skating rink as thin ice and shell ice delay official openings. He warned continued trespass will break the ice and push back opening by about a week.
WHLA joins Wisconsin FM network as sixth unit. 2 p.m. Sunday formal on-air launch with testing since Thanksgiving Day. Network includes WHA FM Madison WHAD Delafield WHKW Chilton WHRM Rib Mountain state park WHWC Colfax. Two more units planned for full statewide coverage. network offers School of the Air College of the Air Homemakers Hour farm weather and classical music programs.
Jacob Malik of the Soviet bloc condemned a 13 nation Korea peace proposal master plan. He argued the United States and Britain would use a truce to ready forces for a new attack and called for UN troop withdrawal before any peace. Malik spoke to the UN political committee.
Former U S ambassador Joseph P Kennedy told a Charlottesville audience that Russia could push the United States into a state of emergency by week’s end without firing a shot. He said America’s foreign policy is in a personal crisis and "made us no foul weather friends." He criticized the policy as politically and morally bankrupt while warning it solidified communism and weakened economic and hemispheric defenses.
