85 Percent Excess Profits Tax Proposed On Oil Firms
Senators George McGovern and Les Aspin introduced a bill to impose an 85 percent excess profits tax on oil companies. The levy targets profits above each firm's four year average, with a deduction for increased investment to boost refining, exploration, or alternative energy. They cite a 2.1 billion rise in the 20 largest oil firms' profits in the first three quarters of 1973 and suggest revenue could fund clean energy. Aspin also urged Wisconsin guards to shift 1974 training to local armories or Camp McCoy to save fuel amid shortages.
