Ice King Holzhammer Sr. Dies at 78 in Brownsville
George Holzhammer Sr known as the Ice King dies at his son's home on Mormon Coulee Road after two weeks of illness. Born in Germany in 184? and aged 78, he moved from Juneau County to Brownsville in 1857 and ran freight between La Crosse and Brownsville. For 47 winters he laid the ice road from Brownsville to La Crosse, earning renown for safety and humanitarian acts along the Great Lakes region. Survived by two sons Jacob and George and four daughters Mrs Guenther Mrs Coyle Mrs Real and Mrs Wolz. Funeral services at the cathedral followed by interment in Brownsville Catholic cemetery.
