High Court May Revise Ruling On Pornography
The Supreme Court signaled it may refine last June's obscenity decisions by agreeing to hear Georgia's appeal over the film Carnal Knowledge ruled obscene. Billy Jenkins, Albany theater operator, was fined 750 dollars and placed on 12 months probation after Dougherty County authorities stopped the movie. The case questions whether obscenity standards should be set by state law or local communities.

Supreme Court narrows obscenity ruling in film cases
The court strengthens prosecutors by requiring only that works lack serious value rather than lack redeeming social value. Chief Justice Burger says only hard core pornography faces sanctions. Georgia argues indecency laws treat all sex portrayals as obscene, while Jenkins counters that films receive First Amendment protection. The Georgia Supreme Court previously deemed Carnal Knowledge obscene amid controversy.
