Onalaska Reduces 1949 Tax Rate To 37 Mills
The Onalaska common council adopted a 1949 tax levy of 37 mills, down two mills from 39 last year, even as assessed city valuation rose about 90 percent. The budget funds school and city needs with $63,303.65 to be raised by taxation, a $5,489.05 cut from the published figure. The board of education sought $40,068.10 for schools, but a $3,000 anticipated surplus from 1948 was credited to reduce the school budget, with assurances that any further school needs will be funded if required. A state building survey citing overcrowded classrooms prompts talks of a possible new school building program and an extra teacher in September.
