U.N. Vote Pressures Israel Over Occupied Lands
At the United Nations General Assembly Egypt and nonaligned states win a strong vote urging states not to act in ways that recognize Israel's occupation of Arab lands. The 86 to 7 tally with 31 abstentions contrasts with last year’s vote, while Israel calls the measure spurious and seeks dialogue. The United States abstained on the resolution after opposing a separate vote on aid references. Later, in Sheboygan Wisconsin, a court takes under advisement a request for a retrial for Douglas Dean, convict in the 1971 killings of five people including his mother. Judge John Buchen aims to rule by January 31. Dean, 20, received five life terms and faces 58 years before parole.
