Stassen Urges Against Atomic Bomb on China
Harold E. B. Stassen, president of the University of Pennsylvania, told a Protestant church group that the atomic bomb should not be dropped on China. He suggested it might be justified to save American troops from a North Korean trap or if Russia begins World War III. He urged the United Nations to push MacArthur to a stabilized ground front with minimal casualties and then conduct attacks by air and sea. The Rev Henry Knox Sherrill of Greenwich, Conn., was elected first president of the National Council of the Churches of Christ.

Welfare Aide Cautions Against Bomb Stampede
CHICAGO The country's civil defence chief laid down a policy of no masse stampede of evacuation from industrial targets in case of atom bomb attack. Industrial cities will be expected to get up off the floor and fight back, said James J. Wadsworth acting director of civil defense in a speech for the American Public Welfare association. Stampedes would be useless and impractical and will not be permitted by state and local authorities responsible for your safety and welfare and national security.
