Pine Bluff Ark December 1 an army of laborers with picks shovels and axes works along the north bank of the Arkansas river to defend the city and its public buildings from a rising flood while Cargill interests claim flood cannot reach their plant and residents pressure Washington for authority to reinforce the levee and divert the river.
W W Cargill Lumber Company at Pine Bluffs Arkansas reports its $3,000,000 holdings are not endangered by the rising water. W W Cargill states property is safe, despite possible further water rise. Government boats are aiding efforts to save the situation and avoid cutting a new channel, as water retreated and eroded land.
Arising river threat prompts residents to press for opening levee despite officials slow response. Banks weakened, Jefferson county structures including a $300,000 hotel and several valuable buildings sit near the rising water. If flood continues, a new levee opening may be forced to avert greater damage, with Fort y thirty foot stage forecast and potential losses in Pine Bluff.
