An AP report from Tehuacan Mexico describes a quake in Puebla state that left towns isolated by 100 yard cracks. Thousands homeless streamed to Tehuacan and other cities as blood drives and aid efforts began.
Prompted by torrential rains, rescuers battled weather as the 6.5 magnitude quake struck Puebla Veracruz region killing over 600. Ciudad Serdan and Orizaba reported hundreds dead. floods worsened the disaster as government counted 393 in Puebla and 92 in Veracruz with 17 later added.
Fair warm and humid Wednesday night with a low around 70. Partly cloudy hot and humid Thursday with a high near 90 and a 20 percent rain chance. Winds shift from southwesterly 5 to 10 mph Wednesday night to northwest near 15 mph Wednesday afternoon. Friday brings partly cloudy skies and a cooler chance of showers.
Washington Governor Daniel J. Evans heads a new coalition of eight state, county and local officials aiming to gain a larger voice in U S policy making. Leaders include Detroit Mayor Roman Gribbs and Georgia's Gil Barrett. They plan to press Congress on budget reform and seek early White House input on Nixon's 1974 program.
Alma Burns Zahn and Raymond W. Nibbe named parade marshals of the 12th annual Oktoberfest to be held October 7 to 11. Zahn, a longtime radio host and community volunteer, leads the Maple Leaf Parade, while Nibbe, former Logan High athletic director, heads the Torchlight Parade on October 11.
Circuit Court Judge William Sachtjen was asked to bring to Madison evidence in the Karleton Armstrong case so Armstrong could view it. Defense counsel Melvin Greenberg sought more information on the evidence after examining it in Milwaukee. Sachtjen denied Armstrong permission to go to Milwaukee due to security concerns.
