Communist led insurgents cut highways 4 and 5 near Phnom Penh 15 miles away as battles for major supply routes intensified. Khmer Rouge surrounded a government company near Ang Snoul on Highway 4 while a civilian vehicle was ambushed killing two and wounding one.
Shop stewards from IAM Local 21 and two other unions met at 2219 East Ave S to hear progress in talks with Trane Co. A spokesman denied a walkout, saying negotiations continue with a company meeting planned later Monday. About 1,900 workers are affected across IAM Local 21, Lodge 1115, and Local 44, with a three-year offer under discussion but a two-year plan debated. Lodge 21 has authorized a strike vote if talks fail.
Nine people, mostly firefighters, were hurt when an explosion and fire rocked the Fashion Trades Building at 318 W. Adams St in Chicago. Windows shattered across the Sears Tower as debris and smoke filled the area two blocks from the blast site. Authorities suspect basement electrical equipment caused the blast and traffic on Adams Street was halted during the morning rush.
Marty S. Stevens, 23, formerly of La Crosse, died in a high speed crash five miles north of La Crescent on North Ridge Road while passing another car. The Beloit man, staying with his brother Jerry Stevens near the scene, was pronounced dead at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, and was to be buried at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park after services at Nelson Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon.

A Colombian airliner with 41 aboard crashed into a foggy hill near Bogota minutes after takeoff from Bogota International Airport. Officials said 36 passengers and five crew died. the turboprop Aero Condor flight was en route to Cartagena Barranquilla and San Andres Island. The aircraft struck Cerro del Cable mountain and split on impact.
Washington abortions in 1972 totaled 38 868, nearly double the 21 579 births, with about 75 percent of patients from outside DC and many from Maryland and Virginia. The report notes a rise after 1971 liberalization, 19 clinics operating, and low complication rates.
