Forest Fires In State Brought Under Control

Forest fires stretched across several sections of the state with most under control. A blaze near Mather in Jackson and Juneau counties had burned about 20 acres north of Mather but was being held. Slack River Falls faced peat bog fires east of Winner Dugoo street near Hart Tie and Lumber, prompting notices of liability if property damage occurred. Near Mauston, 1200 acres of pulp timber burned four miles north of town before being contained. 200 crews aided by National Guard from Camp Williams fought the flames. Black River Falls saw a brush fire at Emir Waldum burning about 30 acres. city crews battled it amid dry conditions. further efforts continued as smaller fires were extinguished. Fire Destroys Tavern Famed For Stairway

Barre Mills Wisconsin fire origin from an oil stove destroyed the Minnie Schaper combining tavern and living quarters Thursday. The building housed an outside spiral stairway known for 30 years. The operator, in the east wing, witnessed the flames from the garden early morning. Firefighters from Barre Mills and West Salem fought the blaze, bringing it under control by 10:30 a.m. Water was drawn from a nearby creek. The structure mixed concrete block and frame with tin, with 10 insurance on contents and an estimated loss of 4000. Henry Leitche owned the building.

City Churches Pay Tribute To Late Bishop McGavick
