Illinois Bans Saturday Night Specials in New Gun Law

Gov. Daniel Walker signed a package of gun bills including a ban on cheap handguns called Saturday night specials effective after Feb. 21, 1974. The law imposes a misdemeanor for noncompliance with fines up to $1,000 and a year in prison, while other measures stiffen penalties for concealed weapons and tighten rules for felons. Police noted many confiscated guns came from juveniles and gang crimes, though specials remain found in Illinois from Southern makers.
