Madison figure Nelson argues for revenue revision and elimination of excess profits tax, urging use of income taxes to curb inflation and monopolies. Wisconsin reps Beck and others oppose the sales tax and defend reform, with party insurgent stance shaping debates in Congress and state delegation.
At the forty-eighth national convention a Sabbath observance conference backed a closer observance of the Sabbath and urged no undue restrictions on amusements. Delegates attacked cigarette advertising and liquor. speakers warned of tobacco's toll and called for moral standards and world disarmament.
Dr. RTD. Jamieson of this city will give a course of five lectures on What in do Datilie Dertér Comes in the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday evening, Aug. 25, beginning at 3380 ppm, and on four other Thursday evenings. The series is under the auspices of the Bureau for Instruction in First Aid. Persons wishing to make the lecture course may register with Mrs. Carl Semsch, 411 South Seventeenth Street.
Rozeman and Montz-Griece Konin gen report a famed Holstein cow at the state college dairy herd averaging over 190 pounds of milk daily for three months. Officials say she may surpass last year's 25,126.5 pounds of milk and three pounds of butterfat daily as the season progresses.
Bay City Michigan reports a lone bandit robbed a Partners' State bank of about $4000 in cash and unspecified Liberty bonds at seldom hour on a Saturday. The cashier and a customer were locked in the vault and released about six o'clock. In a second item, Carl A Olsen, a US Navy seaman from Sheboygan Wisconsin, was killed instantly when he accidentally reached a high tension power line near a radio station.
Spokane railroads announced substantial rate reductions on canned goods dried fruits vegetables and peas in carload lots from Spokane territory to eastern points from St Paul to the Atlantic sea board. The changes take effect August 3 and cover Spokane Walla Walla Yakima and coast points.
Conference report on anti beer bill modifies search provisions and exempts a home from warrantless search with probable cause. House leaders threaten no recess until enactment. Senate shows limited leverage as Stanley amendment to protect property passes. Key figures include Senator Ashurst and Representatives Drew Sterlin Nelson Summers.

LA FOLLETTE AND DEMOCRATS OPPOSE ANY FUNDING PLAN. A majority report says German bonds won’t do and Treasury opposed accepting such bonds. The amendment links funding completion to five years while majority defends broad powers for the secretary to negotiate settlements as needed.
Wisconsin members with Democrats in voting for surtax grain traffic declared most profitable to road. Comparative prices cited to show freights out of line. The tax bill would cut about 818 million from the national tax burden by 1923, with repeal of excess profits tax and income sur-tax increases. Senate action pending after a party-line House vote.
A partially identified Mexican suspect, Tedro Thomito, allegedly linked to a prior shooting, fatally wounded Ventura County Sheriff Ee McMartio and Undersheriff Wm. Kelly in Owens Month, Los Angeles, before fatally injuring himself when surrounded by pursuers. Kelly died about two hours after being struck.
Saskatoon hosts a conference in September to map an ethics campaign against international booze running. W. J. Bell of the Saskatchewan Liquor Commission announces the event, involving Canadian and United States agents in coordination.
Auto club of Western Wisconsin issues a road bulletin for weekend trips and tours. It notes eastbound routes are good with detours at night, advises No 27 to Glack River via Spain road in very good shape, No 11 toward Galesville and north, with detours near Hunter's Bridge. South via Mor Bron Coules to Prairie du Chien uses No 11 and No 20 routes in fine condition. East over Irich Tid is very good, detours on Brownsville route via Brownsville to Caledonia under construction. River Road north via Dres pach is good. road narrows between Dakota and La Moilie. North Ridge drive is passable and scenic. Road conditions vary and drivers should proceed carefully.
The Lacrosse Community Pageant Association announces the indefinite postponement of the historical pageant planned for Labor Day due to uncontrollable conditions. A different type spectacle is planned for early winter, with dates to be announced later by the committee led by Harry O. Williams.
Ventura County Sheriff 4 D McMartin was shot and killed while deputies attempted an arrest at Owens Crossroad in Los Angeles County. Under Sheriff William E Kelly was dangerously wounded. The assailant who shot them was later killed in a confrontation with pursuers.
Hoboken New Jersey reports the arrival of the army transport Wheaton from Antwerp with the bodies of more than five thousand American soldiers.
The American Legion and Red Cross join a national War Risk Insurance campaign. The “Clean-up Squad” will tour Wisconsin, arriving in La Crosse August 29 for four days of hearings on claims for compensation, vocational training, insurance, back pay, and mileage. A local committee coordinates efforts across La Crosse, Monroe, Vernon, and Juneau counties to reach veterans and ensure prompt settlements.
