Dewey Rejects State Guard for Bell Aircraft Strike

Gov. Thomas E. Dewey declined to send state police or militia to Bell Aircraft’s strike-bound plant in Buffalo. Company President Lawrence D. Bell and Sheriff Henry E. Becker had urged a state guard presence amid wage and pension disputes. Dewey granted Becker power to deputize officers and warned of accountability for failures to manage duties. The conflict centers on a 10 cent wage hike sought by the union versus the company’s stance on negotiations.
