Ford maintains firm control of the 1976 Republican National Convention as delegates prepare to nominate him on the first ballot after a decisive victory over Reagan on a key issue. Reagan accepts the defeat but remains in the race with an uphill battle ahead.
Richard H. Pearse Sr. 78 of 1050 Birchview Rd. former Trane Co. vice president died in a local hospital. He joined Trane in 1930 organized its purchasing department and retired as VP of purchasing in 1962. Born March 6 1898 in Minneapolis he attended the U S Naval Academy 1918 to 1921 served as a naval officer and held various clubs memberships. Surviving are his wife four sons two stepchildren and seven stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Edith Newburg in 1961.
Kansas City AP delegates report Ford over 1130 delegate threshold and set to secure the presidential nomination tonight. Ford wins a floor battle over running mate secrecy and accepts Reagan backed platform language. potential veep list includes Baker Si mon Ruckelshaus Reagan Connally while FBI widens probe into Illinois delegation bribe allegations.
West Salem village board backed an all volunteer EMS quick response unit to stabilize patients until ambulance arrival. The plan, led by Ronald Uber, envisions two man teams with pagers and kits, costing about 6500 dollars for start up. The board will coordinate with the Fire Board and seek local funding while population figures and ward reapportionment were discussed.
Ford had surpassed the 1,130 delegate majority needed and his strength rose through the night. AP tally showed Ford with 1,139 votes to Reagan 1,039 and 81 uncommitted, as a Ford spokesman predicted the President would clinch the nomination tonight.
Negotiations start between La Crosse Cooler Co and United Auto Workers Local 1452 at Midway Motor Lodge. The 392 month contract ends Sept 30 and covers 165 workers. Union and company aim to avoid a strike after a past 1970 dispute.
La Crosse district leaders hear from attorney John Bosshard about forming an ad hoc committee of parents to communicate with the school board on discipline. The move follows the Myron McKee controversy at Longfellow Junior High, with petitions backing McKee presented by parents custodians faculty and residents.
