Fifty three local and area naval reservists have been recalled for active duty. Lieut. R. K. Catt announced at the La Crosse naval training center that they must report to the Minneapolis recruiting station by Sept. 6 for physical exams before being sent to Great Lakes.
The Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved President Truman’s $5 billion tax increase to finance the Korean War. The plan boosts individual incomes up to 20 percent for more than 50 million taxpayers and adds $1.5 billion in corporate taxes, with exemptions for military service pay and incentives for rapid retooling. The measure also explores later excess profits taxes and new tax schemes, while offering accelerated deductions for wartime production facilities and adjusted 1950 corporate rates.
Ground breaking ceremonies were held Tuesday at the Eddy Lane and Kilbourne site in Eau Claire for a new unit of Homme children’s home. The project, costing about 75000 dollars, will house 12 to 16 children with house parents and is part of a Lutheran plan to build cottages in several areas.

New York James D Norris president of the International Boxing club announced that negotiations closed for a heavyweight title bout between Buzzard Charles NBA champion and Joe Louis at Yankee Stadium on September 27. Louis will take 35 percent of net receipts and Charles 20 percent. Norris spoke with Marshall Miles Louis manager and with Jake Mintz Tom Tannas Charles co pilots after talks in Buffalo. Louis will move from West Baden Indiana to Pompton Lakes New Jersey August 30 for intense workouts and begin boxing September 1.
Thirty two American prisoners with hands tied behind their backs were shot by Red Koreans on hill 303 west of Waegwan as US troops approached. Three North Korean prisoners were captured. one identified as a killer. Corporal James M. Rudd of Kentucky faced possible war crimes charges.
Elizabeth and her two day old daughter are reported to be making excellent progress with no more daily bulletins. Doctors said the use of excellent signals swift recovery and a splendid sign all is well with Elizabeth and the baby princess. The queen plans to fly to Balmoral to join the king who left for grouse shooting.
The U S population has grown by 598 008 since April 1 and now stands above 151 000 000 according to Census Bureau monthly estimates. The April 1 1950 preliminary census put the total at 150 500 000 and figures may be revised.

Christy Mathewson Jr., 42, son of the baseball great, died from burns after a gas explosion at his San Antonio ranch. He was a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and was installing an electric dishwasher when the blast occurred.
The cactus patch unit, the 103rd infantry division of reservists from Iowa and Minnesota, will begin two weeks of intensive training at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. About 1 500 to 1 600 men are expected under Maj. Gen. Hanford MacNider with Brig. Gen. George Olmsted as assistant commander. The division includes a 55 piece band directed by Sgt. Jack Viloas.
Rail workers plan five day walkouts on the Elgin Joliet and Eastern and the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie starting Aug 22 at 6 am local time. About 5000 workers will be directly affected with potential indirect idling of up to 50000. A wage dispute underpins the action as unions seek a 40 hour week for yard crews and closer pay alignment for train crews. White House negotiations with carriers and unions have ended without a national settlement.
Milwaukee report states Stanley Kosteczko 38 an operator of Loop-o-Plane ride near The Whip at the fair was thrown from his seat and fell about five feet striking an iron railing. Ray Fullington the Whip operator halted the ride after hearing screams.
Col. Peter C. Bullard, commander of the Indiana military district since June 1948, said he expected transfer to Camp McCoy Wisconsin as commander there but had not received definite orders. He noted the adjutant general’s office announced Col. James Urquhart would succeed the retiring commandant at Camp McCoy.
