Ford and Reagan pursue scattered undecided delegates as the Republican National Convention opens in Kansas City. Mary Louise Smith chairs the gathering while both camps claim leading delegate totals amid party division and the looming fall campaign.
Kansas City AP reports delegate counts by candidate based on binding or stated delegate preferences. Ford leads with 1,117 votes, Reagan 1,036, Buckley 1, and 105 uncommitted. Total 2,259. 1,130 needed to nominate.
AP survey shows Ford trailing Reagan by four to 15 votes on a second ballot if no first ballot win. Key second ballot states North Carolina Kentucky Indiana Michigan could shift delegates, with 105 uncommitted delegates available. Ford leads 1117 to 1036 with 1130 needed. Buckley has one.
A large crowd gathered at Pettibone Park Pavilion to honor Dr. Gregory Egan Jr. of the La Crosse Clinic with thanks for 25 years of pediatric care. Families and former patients shared stories of his dedication, noting his habit of handing out sugarless gum and home visits.
The National Weather Service reports record cold across Wisconsin with frost in Eagle River at 31 degrees and Madison posting 40. Duluth Superior hit 36 and Rockford 45, while highs rebound into the 70s and 80s later this week as a high pressure system clears skies. Rain moves in midweek.
Rep Baldus says Carter may visit La Crosse and Eau Claire during Mondale campaign stops in Wisconsin. Mondale will speak Aug 27 at Eau Claire University arena and attend a poolside reception with Obey and Baldus. Baldus cites Carter Mondale ticket appeal to district.
