The great telegraph strike reaches La Crosse as Associated Press operators quit their keys and railroad workers disrupt lines. Western Union and North American service remains desultory while a single operator at Western Union on Badger Street walks out, leaving the city largely without outside communication.
Katie Nowakowski an 18 year old glove maker at Phoenix Knitting Works Milwaukee was badly injured when her braids were caught in a belt under a table as she reached for a dropped comb. The scalp was torn away leaving skin around the neck hanging. The plant reportedly bans braided hair.
In Onalaska Wisconsin a runaway team belonging to Albert Kleinsmith ran away with his 14 year old son near Medary. The boy was found dead by the roadside with no signs of being struck by wheels or horses hooves. The body was taken to the family home near Medary where funeral arrangements will follow.
Paris August 15 formal announcement of the forthcoming marriage of Charles E. McKim and Mrs. Stanford White, widow of the man shot by Harry K Thaw. The ceremony will be held in London next month at St Margaret's church Westminster.
Boston officials James H. Doyle and James H. Hatton were indicted in connection with a $1,500,000 loan bill. Doyle faces a bribery charge regarding council passage, Hatton is charged with perjury. Both were held for trial.
Aug 15 in Launceton Tasmania reports a severe maritime disaster as the steamer Kwatini carrying many passengers wrecks off Strachen. Scores are believed drowned with rescue operations under way and authorities investigating the incident.

Washington, Aug 15. Elihu Root to quit the cabinet and depart at once. Upon Roosevelt’s September return, a new secretary of state will greet him. Robt. Bacon, Loomis successor, also to go amid asphalt scandal fallout. It remains undecided who will replace Root after discussions with Taft at Oyster Bay.
The funeral for Nels Olson, a North Side pioneer who died Tuesday, will be held tomorrow at 2 PM at Charles Street Lutheran Church with Rev. Vik officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Tangier reports Raisuli has once more seized Caid MacLean during the Casablanca bombardment, restoring custody after a later capture.
Miss B Stillwell of Stoddard Wisconsin slipped from a car of the La Crosse City Railway on the North Side Tuesday evening. She was knocked to the ground and injured her hand. She was taken to La Crosse hospital where the injuries were dressed while she cares for her father who was operated on last Monday.
Viroqua Wisconsin August 15 The team of Ed Wiganosky hitched behind Lindemann's store frightened Wednesday morning and broke loose colliding with the survey of Mr E G Theige causing the survey to be demolished Theige's young son was in the surrey but escaped just before the crash leaving Wiganosky's buggy badly wrecked.
The four double truck cars on the North Side line begin trial trips ahead of regular service. Officials expect all cars to be working by week’s end with full service. Initial runs were hindered by tight machinery and bulkiness common to new cars, but faults are expected to be resolved early.
An explosion at a dynamite factory in Doemitz killed or injured about one hundred people. Part of the town was destroyed and residents fled as further blasts were feared. Many workers were blown to pieces.
Mr and Mrs H Seckers of 1106 South Fourth Street report locating three pearls after eight years of hunting. One pearl with pink lustre weighs about seven grains. The trio is valued between 125 and 175 dollars, bringing their total pearls to about 400.
Theodore Hummel of Sparta Wisconsin aged 46 was sentenced to five years at Waupun by Judge Fruit after pleading guilty to criminal assault on his daughters aged 14 and 16. The judge showed leniency due to the defendant’s ignorance as the father of nine.
In the women's tennis final at the Country club yesterday afternoon Miss Eleanor Marston defeated Miss Gertrude Smith to win the cup with a 6-3 1-6 6-4 victory.
London Aug 15 Gen Booth head of the Salvation Army lost his calm over a white feather in a young reporter's hat at Monmouth. He asked the wearer to move to a seat out of sight but she stayed at the reporter’s table and joked that a red feather would have helped. Booth then reproved his staff for not seating women behind him.
