Three Killed in Highway 53 Crash Near Hunters Bridge
Three Iowa tourists died and three others injured in a nearly head-on crash on Highway 53 in northern La Crosse County near Hunters Bridge. Victims include William Muench and Jeanne Muench of Elkader and Alberta Ehrhardt of Elkader. The Ehrhardt couple's son-in-law and two Illinois National Guard members were also among the injured. Kefauver Dies of Ruptured Heart Vessel at Bethesda
Sen Estes Kefauver Tennessee dies at 3 40 am at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a mild heart attack. The 60 year old liberal senator known for crime hearings and anti poll tax and anti lynching efforts had just left the Senate floor ill. He failed two presidential bids in 1952 and 1956 and served in the House before the Senate. His death was announced by aide Charles Caldwell as Kefauver’s wife and daughters rushed home from a Denver vacation.
