Western Union offices in major cities including Chicago Los Angeles Frisco and St Louis see mass walkouts as 1800 operators strike. Post transfers increase while the Board of Trade and railroad lines face disruptions. Gompers travels to Chicago to support the strike and police guard switchboards.
Reports from Chicago dated August 9 indicate Western Union operators are striking or quitting in several cities including St. Louis Los Angeles Detroit Cincinnati and Chicago. In St Louis two men resigned after being ordered to relay messages from the Chicago office following the strike call. Union officers quickly confronted the company and issued an ultimatum.
Kansas City reports that Western Union employees may strike at 1 PM unless the local office agrees to handle messages to or from offices involved in ongoing trouble. The move follows union pressure and security concerns across branches.
San Francisco reports Los Angeles conditions unchanged as telegraphers in the city are ordered to strike at noon. The move is described as the worst possible blow to Western Union on the Pacific coast.
Chicago reports a growing telegraphers strike triggered by a dispute over strikebreakers. About 47 000 workers reportedly walkout across Western Union with Chicago offices paralyzed and Postal threatened for 3 pm. San Francisco and Kansas City expected to join. The Twentieth Century Limited on the Lake Shore wrecked near South Bend Indiana at 7 30 this morning after crashing into a freight train. The engine and tender were wrecked and three coaches derailed. Passengers escaped serious injury while the engineer and fireman were seriously hurt but not fatally.
A dispatch reports 48 Dutch soldiers slain by a band of Mori Indians in Cele bees near Amsterdam. The soldiers were ambushed, and the attack prompted a national dispatch from Holland dated August 9.
In Shelby, farmer Carl John fought a ten minute duel with a rattlesnake hidden behind a door in his house. He struck thrice before finally killing the reptile, then claimed a fifty cent bounty after proving the kill. The snake had eight rattles and a button.

New York August 9 A brakeman named Charles Shudley on the New York New Haven Hartford line was pinned beneath a locomotive in the Bronx railway yards and had a leg amputated before he could be freed. The operation by an ambulance surgeon occurred without anesthetics and Shudley advised during the procedure. He was hospitalized after extraction and may recover.
Madison Wis August 9 According to former Attorney General L M Sturdevant special claim agent of Wisconsin the state has a good chance of obtaining more than 1 000 000 from the federal government for state lumber lands within the Menominee Oneida La Pointe and Court Oreilles Indian reservations Mr Sturdevant is preparing a bill to be introduced in Congress next December by a Wisconsin senator to reimburse the state for the lands in question
In Judge Groscup's court today the Standard Oil Company plea for a writ of error in the suit fined 29 million by Judge Landis was granted. The case now proceeds to the court of appeals.
Mrs Lucy Hoyt aged 87 of 1806 Wood Street died at a La Crosse hospital after weeks with a broken hip that would not heal due to age. Funeral from her home Sunday afternoon with Rev A L Wood of Caledonia Street M E Church officiating. Interment in Oak Grove. Dwyer Funeral Home in charge. She leaves a daughter Mrs Nichols, also of 1806 Wood Street.

Montgomery Alabama August 9 The Southern railway has surrendered conceding all points in its dispute with the state after a three day conference between President Finney of the railway and Gov Comer The decision means trains will not be stopped by state officers and indictments against the railway will be quashed The clash began over a law barring foreign corporations from removing suits to federal courts The governor threatened to mobilize militia but the railway will return disputed cases to state courts and defend actions in their origin courts
