Oxnam Attacks Spellman Plan On Federal Aid To Schools
Bishop Oxnam accuses Cardinal Spellman of a calculated plan to block federal aid to public schools unless funds go to parochial education. He links Spellman to a broader Catholic hierarchy effort and compares it to a world communist party in aiming to control minds, excommunication and economic pressure. Cardinal Spellman’s NY statements cite a limited role for federal funds for auxiliary services and deny seeking money for teaching or construction.

Girl Two Given Chance To Live After Surgery
Two year old Judy Rae Carpenter of Mortice Michigan was given better than an even chance to live after removal of a tumor described as the largest of its kind seen. Doctors call the tumor the included twin and believe it would have formed a normal twin if development had continued. The three hour operation relieved pressure on the chest and allowed the lung to expand.
