Senate approves broad pay hike for armed forces

The Senate unanimously backs a pay raise affecting most active duty personnel and reservists, costing about 1.23 billion dollars annually. Enlisted grades gain 5 to 120 dollars monthly, officers 60 to 120 dollars, with extra allowances for Cold War duty and dependents. The bill may go to conference with the House, which passed a similar measure.

Hundreds of unregistered Negroes vote protest in Mississippi

About 500 unregistered Negroes attempted protest votes in Mississippi's Democratic primary under a law aimed at clerical errors. They each filed affidavits claiming unconstitutional denial of registration by discriminatory laws and pressure. No incidents were reported. Driver Killed When Car Hits Pole Near Fond du Lac

A 30-year-old Fond du Lac County man Lyle Mueller of rural Eldorado was killed when his car lost control and struck a telephone pole about six miles west of Fond du Lac on Highway 23. Wisconsin 1963 highway toll stands at 477, down from 528 a year earlier.

Restaurant manager Rene Black dies at 83 in Pound Ridge

Rene Black, 83, former restaurant manager for the Waldorf Astoria in New York and the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach, died Monday at his Pound Ridge estate. The longtime hospitality figure was known for his service in landmark hotels.

Kennedy Scores Second Kennedy Child Birth At Otis Air Base

Mrs. John F. Kennedy gave birth to the president’s second son at Otis Air Force Base Hospital after a Caesarean delivery at 1 15 p.m. EDT. Preliminary Exams Set For Youths In Indecent Libel Case

Two of three youths charged with taking indecent liberties with a 14 year old La Crosse girl face preliminary examinations and La Crosse County Court arraignment after Wednesday court action. Ronald Schroeder 18 and Steven K Mallory 17 both of Caledonia Minnesota had bail reduced from 5000 to 2500 each but one still seeks 500 bond. Ardis Nelson 19 of 706 Pine St did not appear in court and will be expected Monday in Circuit Court. Mallory and Schroeder will appear Friday in County Court to set future appearance time.

Fire Devours 550 Foot Boardwalk At Asbury Park

A blaze destroyed a 550 foot section of the Asbury Park boardwalk including Sunset Pavilion with 12 shops. City Manager Kendall H. Lee put damage at 1 million and said a dropped cigarette likely started the fire. A 79 year old spectator died and eight firefighters were treated for minor injuries. Thousands watched as 300 firefighters battled the flames and authorities blocked a two block area with fire lines.
