B-29 crash at Fairfield-Suisun kills 17 with 60 injured

Flaming gasoline and exploding bombs shattered a crippled B-29 bomber at Fairfield-Suisun Air Base. Brig. Gen. Robert F. Travis died in the crash as 17 air force personnel perished and about 60 were injured, many seriously, while flames consumed the tailer camp near the scene.

W F Strauss Dies Sunday In Utica Michigan

William F. Strauss 86 lifelong La Crosse resident died Sunday at his son’s home in Utica Michigan. He ran a shoe store at 320 Pearl Street for years and served as city assessor 1931 1948 and alderman 1913 1925. Born January 29 1864 in La Crosse he was survived by six children and four sons lived in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Electric Auto-Lite management and UAW-CIO representatives announced a tentative settlement halting a strike at the La Crosse division plant near Toledo. South Pacific Adventurer Kruse Dies After Meningitis

Clifford Kruse 30 former La Crosse Tribune sports correspondent died of meningitis on Trobriand island east of New Guinea after leaving the South Pacific voyage last August. Buried on the island, he left behind relatives in Dubuque and Dane, and had lived a life of varied work from Marine pilot to Hollywood script writer and Iowa newspaper editor.

Mrs. Rose Benson of Jefferson township has learned her son Pvt. Lyle Benson 22 was wounded in Korea. He is with the First Cavalry in Korea and enlisted last March after two years service in the Navy. He left the United States in June.

Three-Year-Old Linda Barker Found After Long Search

A Sunday picnic near De Soto Wisconsin ended in a day-long search for Linda Barker three who wandered from Greenlake picnic grounds. Local residents joined the hunt and a bloodhound team from La Crosse was deployed but crowding prevented scent tracking. Sheriff Morris Moon directed the effort with Under sheriff Robert Smail assisting before the child was located.

Reserve Artillery Unit In State Is Alerted

The 887th field artillery army reserve battalion headquar ters announced it will go on active duty Sept. 4. Formed from Appleton and Green Bay volunteers, the unit aims to reach full strength by September 4 with unattached reservists. First active post will be Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. commander is Maj. Miron Rapella of Manitowoc.

Chinese shore batteries strike British freighter Hangsang

In Hong Kong a 5,000 ton British freighter Hangsang was fired on by Chinese Communist shore batteries on Monday. Two ship's officers were wounded by fragmentation.

Marines Mobilize 80 000 Reserve Forces

The Marine Corps announced it will mobilize all 80 000 volunteer reserves. About 50 000 officers and men will report for active duty between Aug 15 and Oct 31. Additional air reserve units are being called up. Ground reserve units are already in active duty. No date set for the 30 000 volunteer reserves not in the first summons.

Five Teens Hurt When Car Rolls Near City

About 1:40 a m Sunday a 1941 car carrying five teens rolled over several times on highway 14 near Shelby. Rose Torgerson 16 and Jo Karen Olson 19 were hospitalized with injuries. Driver George Kleinhaus 19 suffered bruises. two others Dick Krause 18 and Walter Connell 20 had bruised shoulders. The wreck occurred after weaving near a highway curve. car steering problems were noted. A wrecker removed the wrecked vehicle. A separate 9:15 am crash at the junction of county Trunk DH and highway 53 involved Rev Clarence Solberg and Jack Martin. Solberg skidded on loose gravel and ended on the left side facing his direction, causing damage to both cars.
