In Nantua France a 12 000 ton rock named Column threatens a town near Geneva and will be blown up on Sept 4 unless an emergency arises earlier. The rock shifted 1 1/2 inches in a day after heavy rain and 1 inch a year previously. 800 kilograms of dynamite to be used with precautions against debris.
In Athens a Sunday assault by two Arab men using grenades and pistols killed two Americans, one Austrian, and wounded 55 before they surrendered after taking hostages behind a marble bar. Police disarmed a nonfunctional time bomb and questioned several others as fear spread through the transit lounge.
Cambodian and military sources say a misdirected U.S. bombing strike hit the Mekong River base at Neak Luong killing about 100 and wounding many others. Additional U.S. air strikes killed civilians near Phnom Penh as fighting around Highway 1 continued.
Fulgencio Batista the Cuban dictator toppled by Fidel Castro in 1959 died at a Marbella resort villa in Spain at age 72. His son Ruben said the ex sergeant suffered a heart attack after a family meal. He left a wife Marta and children, with funeral services planned for Madrid.
Milwaukee teen Mark Genthe, 17, stapled his knee while installing shingles on a rooftop. Firefighters used extreme care to lift him in a sling and lower him to the ground. A 2.2 inch staple was removed at a hospital and he was released.
Joseph Holt, assistant secretary of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents since 1955, was named secretary of the board. He also serves as UW trust officer and will be paid 23750 yearly. Regent president Frank Pelisek cited annual savings of 30000 by consolidating posts after 160 applications were submitted.
Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun told 750 ABA members at the annual convention to rebuild the ruins of Watergate and remove the taint from public life. He warned the Watergate atmosphere touches all, urged steadfast rebuilding, and referenced Nehemiah to symbolize renewal amid political scandal.

George W. Cash a 48 year old Chicagoan was arrested within 25 minutes of a Monday shooting at the OK Tavern Copeland Ave and was scheduled for arraignment on attempted first degree murder. Ronald Schaller 28 of Bainbridge St was treated for a chest wound at St Francis Hospital. Detectives searched for a weapon and asked Chicago police to verify a 22 caliber pistol registered to Cash. Cash claimed Schaller approached him about his girl Carol LaMere 29 of Copeland Ave. LaMere was jailed on drunkenness charges.
New York banks led by Chase Manhattan Bank raise the prime lending rate to 9 percent, matching a rise by three banks on Friday. The move sets an all time high and likely to spread across the industry in coming days. The rate affects large corporate borrowing for short-term loans.
