French and Spanish warships opened fire on Casablanca after Moorish tribesmen attacked landing troops protecting the French consulate. Dozens killed or wounded as bombardment razed villages and battered coast defenses. Moorish commander surrendered to the French admiral.
Edward Becker from Bottineau North Carolina arrives to join the Champs and will enter the lineup in a day or two. Vogt shifts to second with Du Chien at shortstop. Boston report details Julia Ward Howe born May 27 1819 educated by tutors married Samuel Gridley Howe in 1843. They were active in anti slavery work and she later championed woman suffrage. Howe remains a Unitarian preacher with homes in Boston and Newport.

Chicago reports Arthur W. Fontain a lawyer accused of jury bribery was arrested and returned to Fond du Lac Wisconsin. He is noted among La Crosse lawyers and faces legal action over alleged corrupt influence.
The North Side Progressive league will hold a meeting in Woodman hall on Rose street tomorrow evening.
Governor Smith signed the bill making Georgia a prohibition state in Atlanta with a large crowd present. The auditorium committee will not report to the council.
Fourteen are dead and eighteen injured in a Pennsylvania road wreck near Kelly Station. The Conemaugh site on the Buffalo and Allegheny division saw a freight car derail or fail, sending rails onto an east bound track in front of a north bound passenger train. Engineer M B Irwin is among the dead.

Washington Aug 6 Judge Landis directs District Attorney Sims to impanel a special grand jury to indict the Chicago and Alton railroad amid criticism of the administration. Simms advised against pursuing the same vigor against the railroad as used against oil.
Governor Comer vows to enforce Alabama laws against the Southern railway at any cost. Advisers hint at calling an extra legislature session or deploying troops if needed to compel compliance. The Alabama railway commission refuses to recognize the Southern railway, stating its license is revoked and they have no authority to intervene.

An earthquake shock was felt late Monday at Valparaiso Chile. Heavy shocks were recorded in Trieste by the observatory recorders, with calculations placing the epicenter about 2,500 miles away.
