Nathan Gregory Silvermaster faced the House Un American Activities Committee denying ever being a spy or agent for any foreign government while admitting he remained on the government payroll during World War II. Elizabeth Bentley testified he led a wartime Communist group and ran a basement laboratory for secret documents. Silvermaster claimed he was cleared by national agencies and warned Bentley’s charges were false and fantastic. He now works in the house building business from Harvey, New Jersey.

F W Fox, 87, of 214 South Ninth Street, died suddenly at his home early Wednesday. He managed Hogan's wholesale grocery in La Crosse for 27 years before retirement. Survived by wife, two daughters Mrs W M Dvorak and Mrs Lillian Gottschalk of La Crosse, a son Edward of Homer Neb, seven grandchildren and three great. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
