License Revoked for Prominent Minnesota Rector
After 40 years in ministry in England and the United States, Rev. Robert Hammond Cotton, 67, was denied license to preach in the Diocese of Minnesota by Bishop S. C. Edsall. The revocation bars him from Episcopal pulpit worldwide and stems from his assertion that the virgin birth and resurrection are untrue, a view he called a “beautiful fairy story.” Cotton vows to seek outside congregations and faces excommunication. He previously served as rector of Trinity Church in Fort Worth and helped build three Minnesota churches. Church officials fear a Crapsey style echo may follow.

Jacob Kohlhaus 79, longtime Segelke & Kohlhaus leader and former La Crosse alderman, died at 5 a m at 715 South Fourth street. Born September 12 1829 in Saxon Weimar Germany he immigrated in 1853 and helped found a sash and door company. He led the firm until 1906 and was active in Odd Fellows Germania society and Liederkranz.
