County Board selects William Bush as chairman with a 22 to 12 vote over Elizabeth Gundersen. Bush vows to be alert to change and to represent the entire county, while supporting a potential city county merger where savings occur.
La Crosse County Board reshapes its Highway Committee at the organizational meeting. Kendall Casberg is the lone returning member alongside Clarence Christopher Lawrence Hauswirth Ernest Kowal and Leonard Yeskie. Hauswirth defeats Chris Weiss for the new seat. the rest are unopposed. The Agriculture Committee also gets new members Charles Pierce Sylvester Clements William Bush Walter Gilbert and Douglas Farmer with former chair Carl Bruhnke defeated in a contest.
A group of Wisconsin farmers opposed to Interstate 43 construction unload three cows and a calf on the statehouse lawn in Madison to press Gov Lucey and officials to reroute the highway away from US 141. They set up a livestock pen and sought meetings with aides amid patrol confrontations and security checks. The protest argues the corridor should avoid the 141 roadbed, despite assurances from High Commission officials.
The Ford administration shifts priority to fuel conservation along with new energy sources. ERDA's updated plan to Congress forecasts saving 5.3 to 7.3 million barrels per day by 1985, roughly one third to one half of current oil use.
Wisconsin wagon master Gus Klatt leads 25 Conestoga wagons east from La Crosse toward West Salem in a $4 to $5 million Bicentennial voyage. The trip mirrors 200 years ago with modern comforts aboard and aims to remind Americans of founding principles as they travel toward Valley Forge.
