Plastic debris from Thresher sinking shows burned traces
A large 18 inch polyethylene piece found with new Thresher debris bore charred spots indicating a rush of flame, a naval court heard. Chemist Frederick L. Downs said the plastic, from Thresher class submarines, contained reactor shielding material and metal bits. Additional debris and life jacket padding were shown as evidence. tests continue to determine the cause.

Nine Alabama Family Members Believed Drowned
SCOTTSBORO Ala AP Nine members of a rural Alabama family, mostly children, were believed drowned Friday night when a small outboard boat overturned in the Tennessee River near Scottsboro. Two bodies were recovered at dawn, seven others were missing. Eleven people were aboard when the boat swamped. Mrs Ola Pruitt and John Caves two were recovered.
