Minot North Dakota braces for more rain and high winds as the Souris River rises toward dike tops. Officials estimate up to an inch of rain with 25 to 30 mph winds and a weekend-long precipitation threat. Evacuations continue as dikes hold and residents weigh risks of remaining.
Elizabeth Gundersen and William Bush emerge as candidates for county board chairman after Gundersen announced her bid and Bush confirmed his. The organizational meeting will decide the post with little current opposition, while Pierce opted out citing time commitments. Gundersen, 45, has served on the board since 1972 and promotes open government and countywide cooperation.
Local 1263 workers at UOP Norplex approve a three year contract by a 117 to 32 vote after a 1 hour 15 minute meeting at the AFL-CIO Labor Temple. The deal includes a $1.10 hourly raise over three years and three to four weeks of extra vacation based on tenure, plus enhanced medical and life insurance benefits. John Holt expresses mixed feelings saying he can live with it but is not happy.
Wolfgang Esselborn, 34, named to head four Univer sal Oil Products Norplex Division plants in the U S including La Crosse. He will succeed retiring George Kroening April 30 and will remain part time through year end as consultant. Kroening has led Norplex since 1968 and will retire after a long career with the firm.
New trial for terold Hammill on kidnapping and false imprisonment would violate constitutional rights, argues defense attorney Philip Arneson. Hammill, already sentenced to life plus 60 years for murder rape and attempted murder, faces potential four to six extra months of parole eligibility if retried.
The Associated Press reports Wisconsin saw damaging summerlike storms with high winds up to 60 mph and six tornadoes. Farm buildings in Columbia and Dodge counties suffered damage while trees fell elsewhere. Rain totals reached 2.5 inches in Juneau and other amounts in Verona Mequon Beloit Racine and Elkhorn. Highs ranged to 86 at Sturtevant and 80 at Milwaukee with more storms possible into Saturday.
