Caledonia Hospital Wing Collapses After Crack Found
A 70 by 30 foot section of Caledonia Community Hospital’s 11 year old wing collapsed at 10 15 a m Sunday ten minutes after five patients were evacuated. A maintenance worker spotted a crack in the foundation and alerted staff. The north wall fell into a crawl space under the building and the roof sagged. Bulldozers moved dirt to ease pressure as officials feared further collapse. The wing, built in 1962 for 750000 by Nelson Lumber Co, housed patients in other sections while crews cleared debris and planned to start over. No cause or damage estimate given.
