In La Crosse, Mayor W Peter Gilbertson wins re election by 12 188 to 2434 over challenger Philip A Dyer. Mrs O Nieta Thorsen elected City Clerk and Wesley M Denny chosen City Treasurer. Thorsen defeats Roger Vogt 7516 to 6586 for clerk post.
Dr. Barbara Thompson defeated Ernest J. Korpela to become state school superintendent for a four year term. Justice Bruce F. Beilfuss won a 10 year Wisconsin Supreme Court seat over Robert J. Beaudry in a high turnout election seen as a test between professionalism and populist politics.
Wisconsin voters approved a bingo constitutional amendment while defeating a proposed equal rights amendment. The bingo measure marked the state's first major test of allowing legal gaming. Proponents argued the measure would regulate gaming, while opponents raised concerns about broader social impacts.
Mrs. Gundersen Robert Kuechmann and Linda Bolen won seats on the La Crosse Area Public School District Board of Education. Bolen 18 became the county's youngest elective office winner, edging McLoone 8073 to 7824. Gundersen swept 21 districts and six towns. Kuechmann praised persistence and Tribune endorsement. The trio will take office July 1.
La Crosse voters re-elected incumbents and elected Sharon Ines as the city’s first woman alderman in 117 years. She defeated Stephen Valley 476 to 249 in the 11th district relocation race. Several districts installed new aldermen while others returned incumbents.

The nationwide meat boycott continues into its fourth day with farmers delaying cattle and hog sales. Layoffs and beef-order cutbacks accompany meatless menus as consumer science experts suggest reducing impulse buying to save on food prices. A New York insurance executive who had been away for 40 years visited an Oklahoma campus, stating he was encouraged by his observations.
La Crosse County voters backed Judge Leonard Roraff for County Court Branch 2 17 306 to 3531 over Patrick Doyle. They also supported Justice Bruce Beilfuss 14 420 to 4 463 and Barbara Thompson 13 598 to 6 629 for state superintendent. Voters approved one amendment bingo 12 123 to 6 521 and opposed equal rights 8 936 to 8 406.
