Viet Cong assault teams mined a bridge and fired five 100 pound rockets into southern Saigon edges wounding six and damaging seven houses. Rockets were launched from the Rung Sat area six miles southeast of Saigon. American artillery engaged the positions as telegraphed by the AP report from Saigon.
Thousands of demonstrators paraded peacefully down Michigan Avenue in a rally against the Vietnam War and police actions at the Democratic National Convention. The march, 5 to 10 abreast over 10 blocks, drew police and volunteers as Grant Park hosted speeches marking a month since convention week clashes.
A Senate panel says the Soviet Union is developing a new Polaris-like class of submarines with nuclear missiles that could strike the United States from 1,500 miles offshore while submerged. The report warns of a growing Soviet ICBM force, urges faster AMSA and advanced ICBM research, and notes U S missile force near 1,054 launchers with limited growth.
In Bonn De Gaulle told Chancellor Kiesinger that the European Common Market would collapse if Britain and others join without France. He insisted France can live without the Market but the Market cannot exist without France. The leaders pledged solidarity and cooperation and outlined French-German ties and vigilance on Soviet threats.

A 10-year-old Winnetka Illinois boy named John Fargo was treated at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona Minnesota after a cabin cruiser broke down on the Mississippi River. He apparently fell on the boat and cut his forehead. The Winona County Sheriff reports six to eight people aboard when a pin sheared and a sheriff boat towed the craft to shore.
Bombay reports that Soviet space scientists are due to arrive early this week to transport the Zond 5 lunar probe back to the USSR after its recovery from the Indian Ocean on September 21.
