An earthquake struck Bingol in eastern Turkey causing extensive destruction. Officials warned hundreds may be dead with up to 2000 injured as major buildings including a prison and hospital were ruined in Bingol city of 17000. A mobile hospital and 1500 tents were dispatched from Elazig and Erzurum respectively.
In the Strait of Georgia an explosion and fire ripped the forward section of the Norwegian cruise ship Meteor. An undetermined number of crew members are reported dead, while all 70 passengers were rescued without serious injury, with 66 picked up by the Alaska state ferry Malaspina. An unidentified Canadian Coast Guard officer said there are dead aboard the Meteor, pending official confirmation.
In San'alfio Sicily Mt Etna lava flow narrowly misses the hilltop town leaving 4000 residents relieved Mayor Salvatore Cozzubbo says the area is safe though most of the town is burned with $16 million in damages. Lava scorched farms and vegetation as tourists drew near the lava edge before officials barred entry.
Riverland Girl Scout Council hosts an Eco Action weekend at Camp Ehawee with 100 plus girls and leaders from seven counties in Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa. Wisconsin DNR personnel lead Saturday classes on ecology wildlife forestry and water protection while an ecumenical service is planned for Sunday.
The 67th Minnesota Legislature adjourned Saturday night with a special session looming. Gov. Wendell Anderson is expected to call the session Sunday to address taxes and spending as conservatives in both houses push austerity while the governor seeks higher state spending to ease property tax burdens. The clash over tax reform and spending pits Anderson against Conservative majorities led by Ernest Lindstrom and Jerome Blatz.
University of Wisconsin Medical School Alumni Day heard Garret Hardin assert that male and female subcultures drive abortion controversy. He traced abortion usage to midwives in Europe and argued women focus on practical childbearing outcomes rather than theological debate.
Wisconsin Associated Press Association, at its spring meeting in Re outfit, urged passage of a Senate bill protecting newsmen from disclosing non public confidential information gathered in the course of work. The measure would allow withholding sources unless courts find the meeting violated the law or disclosure is needed to prevent a threat to life or combat espionage or foreign aggression. The group urged tougher anti secrecy penalties for officials who shield teachers and school boards in contract talks. Joe Karius was elected president of the association.
In Rockland Wisconsin opposition from a small minority emerges against expanding Beron’s Veterans Home a rehab center for discharged military veterans. The Berons who run two houses seek a remodeling to house six more veterans but face zoning and permit hurdles from Trustee Elmer Fitzs and a divided village board. A special meeting was called to appoint a zoning board of appeals while residents show strong support with 80 to 90 percent endorsing continued use of the remodeled house.
