President Johnson urged unity in South Viet Nam during a press conference in Washington. He deplored diversions from the war effort and democratic process and urged factions to reconcile while constitutional changes move forward. He avoided predicting policy toward Premier Ky and acknowledged a difficult, unresolved situation.
In Da Nang a U S Marine general warned South Vietnamese Air Force planes to stop firing on Marine positions or face being shot down. A Vietnamese fighter jet fired rockets into a Marine position wounding three Americans. U S forces were placed on maximum alert and some aircraft withdrawn for safety.
Rebel leaders at the Tinh Hei pagoda in Da Nang said they would negotiate with government generals if the U.S. Marine commander guarantees their safety. The offer was delivered to Lt. Gen. Lewis W. Walt, but there was no immediate response.
Four winners were named in regional Alice in Dairyland contests on Saturday. Diane Dregne from Viroqua and Cheryl Walton from Richland Center were selected from 18 contestants in Viroqua. Ellen Rainer of Sparta and Delight Jostad of Holmen were chosen from 21 contestants in Tomah. They advance to the state contest in Eau Claire June 9 to 11.
Hundreds of Southwestern Wisconsin residents visited Camp McCoy for Armed Forces Day. A live-fire demonstration by the Wisconsin Army National Guard 32nd Infantry Division showcased crew-served weapons including mortars rockets machine gun and recoilless rifle. Units from Appleton Neenah Marinette Clintonville Manitowoc Two Rivers Plymouth Sheboygan Elkhorn Whitewater Burlington Oconomowoc Hartford Oak Creek Watertown Fort Atkinson participated under Lt Colonel Frank Lee.
Former President Eisenhower calls for authority to sell nuclear weapons and submarines to NATO allies under special conditions. He writes from Walter Reed Hospital to Sen. Jackson and Rep. Kelly, urging allied military buildup and criticizing current nonproliferation limits. The suggestion clashes with Senate House Atomic Energy Committee stance and Johnson administration policy. In Da Nang South Viet Nam air operations shifted as planes flew to other fields amid rebel attacks and Buddhist protests. Fifteen U S service members were injured while government and rebel clashes continued near the base. Police faced rioting in Saigon as Ky’s government tightened security around Da Nang.
Maria Remenyi of El Cerrito wins Miss USA in Miami Beach. The 20 year old UC Berkeley junior with 35 23 35 measurements came to the United States in 1965 as a Hungarian refugee and plans to be an atomic scientist. First runner up was Pat Deane of Connecticut who will assume duties if needed.
Gov Warren Knowles secures acclamation for the GOP ticket with Louis Ceci as attorney general candidate. Olson concedes, Ceci led the only endorsement contest, while Knowles faces highway funding resistance from delegates. Zimmermann and Mrs. Smith seek reelection, Olson former Lt. Gov. Olson vacant post bid. Haberman of AFL CIO addresses delegates amid talks of GOP labor relations.
