California Boomerang Pilot Finishes Coast-to-Coast Flight
First Lt. John M. Conroy, a World War I Purple Heart veteran, flew 5,085 miles from Los Angeles to New York and back to L A in 11 hours 26 minutes 33 seconds. He averaged about 445 mph with six refuelings in an FR6A Sabre Jet nicknamed the California Boomerang. He claimed the breakfast to supper feat preceded official sunset by 242 hours and set a new east-to-west record, surpassing Paul Mantz’s 1947 mark. He was greeted by his wife Jeanne and three children at the return.
