The Board of Education and the Common Council clash over Washington School fate as overcrowding drives district plans. The board favors retaining the site as reserve space, while the council wants to turn it over to La Crosse State College for a Campus School.
The Board of Park Commissioners announces citywide mosquito control steps are underway with spraying in marshy spots and stagnant pools. One crew uses a fine spray of DDT and Malathion at 100 mph. Tossil capsules treat isolated pools. A thermal fogging device may be added for hard to reach areas, with no aerial spraying planned this year. Property owners can request omissions by contacting the board, with notices posted around sprayed areas.
The Common Council directed the mayor's committee and the Board of Education to plan and negotiate disposal of the Washington School property to the State of Wisconsin for La Crosse State College expansion. A report of negotiations and plans is to be made to the Council as state college regents express interest in acquiring the property.
A tornado struck Wausaukee Wisconsin damaging the blacksmith shop and four other buildings including a bank. One woman suffered a broken arm at her home during the excitement and was treated by a physician. Damage pegged at 150000 by local officials.

Soustelle fled to Algeria amid Gaullist support and elevated tensions across France.
Jacques Soustelle, de Gaulle ally and former Algeria governor, landed in Algiers after slipping across the border. He praised De Gaulle as the national arbiter and urged unity, while meeting Gen. Raoul Salan and Gen. Massu amid a warm European crowds.

Officials said no criminal negligence by zoo staff after Julia Ann Vogt, 24, was dragged into a lion cage at a Washington zoo. The incident left her grandfather, Harry Jackson, ill with a heart attack trying to save her. The lion house reopened with patrols and a 3% foot guardrail to keep spectators away.
Britain asked the United States to hold final action on suspending nuclear tests until Prime Minister Harold Macmillan can discuss the issue with President Eisenhower in Washington next month. The test ban is likely to be a major topic at the June 9-10 conference and could shape an East West summit with Khrushchev if agreed.
