A nationwide survey of 1,532 communities serving 95 million people finds urban areas facing water shortages and the need for development of new underground sources and pumping facilities. The La Crosse system serves 48,600 people with 7.5 million gallons daily, and a 19.5 million gallon daily capacity.
The Tribune reports a Gallup Poll study of farm voters across 12 Midwest states to gauge a possible farm revolt influencing November elections. Interviews with farmers and wives cover attitudes before primary results, with a series beginning on page 24.
The Wisconsin State Department of Taxation reported La Crosse will receive 665 478 as its first quarter share of income tax payments by individuals and corporations up 11 5 percent from last year. County and Onalaska shares rose as well with 143 910 and 11 714 respectively. Experts caution the gains may be revised in August as more late returns are processed. The total state income tax receipts through March 30 reached 63 467 842, up 6 5 percent from 1955.
Elia Medin 21 of Mondovi and Betty Zeman 18 of Melrose were selected as Region Six Alice in Dairyland candidates at a Mondovi regional contest. Medin is a junior at Stout Institute majoring in home economics. Zeman is a Luther College freshman majoring in elementary education.
La Crosse police describe an eight point primary roadblock net to seal off routes from the city with secondary nets from neighboring counties across three states. The system proved effective in arresting two Rochester teens accused of theft from a La Crosse service station.

President Eisenhower left Walter Reed after doctors reported his heart well healed and general health good. The two day tests showed normal heart rhythm and size, no enlargement, and good tolerance to activity. He visited Burning Tree Country Club and played golf amid crowded cheers.
In Nicosia a leaflet campaign by the EOKA, led by Digenis possibly Col. Grivas, calls for execution of Governor Sir John Harding. It frames the fight as a Greek Cypriot struggle and urges Cypriots to denounce violence while warning of a new threat after a prior bomb scare.
Severe weather moved rapidly eastward with tornado conditions forecast then cancelled in the Coulee Region. In Michigan, Flint and Detroit suburbs sustained damage and several deaths were reported as winds up to 70 mph battered Cleveland later.
The Gridiron Club hosted President Eisenhower at its 71st annual dinner at the Statler Hotel with 500 guests including Cabinet members Congress and the Supreme Court. Skits and songs roasted both Republicans and Democrats with playful barbs about Nixon and a mock jury verdict.
Twisters raked southern Michigan late Saturday and night, killing at least five people and injuring more than 100. In Flint a seven mile path through the eastern outskirts claimed four lives from one family. An elderly woman died near Ithaca as storms battered the region.
For the 12th straight week there were no winners in the Coulee Crossword Contest with puzzle No. 55’s prize rising to 400 dollars. The weekly total reached 338,514 with 5,795 entries last week. Norma Nelson of 1121 Avon St. had one wrong answer correcting 2 across from pack to pick.
