A high speed Baltimore and Ohio passenger train derailed seven miles southwest of La Porte Indiana sending 60 injured with 13 passengers and one crewman hospitalized. No fatalities reported. The Chicago to Washington line derailment affected about 100 aboard including 39 Stevens Point Wisconsin high school seniors.

Wreck Rips Through Twin Cities Freight Line
A Great Northern passenger train struck a derailed freight car west of Minneapolis, derailing 20 cars and five diesel units. Thirty two people were rushed to hospitals with at least one listed in critical condition. The Western Star traveling from Chicago to Seattle collided after a freight car derailed on an adjoining track. Engineer Gene Wicklund reported the derailment but said the passenger train could not stop in time. The crash damaged mail cars and injured several railway mail clerks.

AP reporting from Bremerhaven Germany shows a U S Air Force instructor attached to the West German Air Force died during an Armed Forces Day exhibition after crashing his Starfighter jet. Maj Thomas Eugene Perfili of Toledo Ohio was identified by the Defense Department news release. Witnesses recalled the pilot likely stayed with the aircraft to avoid crashing into spectators, a heroic act according to onlookers.

Barrier blamed for moving stairway jam at stadium
