First annual St Patrick’s Day parade through La Crosse
Temperatures near 32 and brisk winds did not curb the first annual St Patrick’s Day parade in La Crosse. Mayor W Peter Gilbertson led more than 40 parade units along Causeway Boulevard with Shamrock Club of La Crosse sponsorship. Diverse groups including Cavalets Baton and Drum Corps Lincoln Junior High band and Warriors Baton and Drum Corps joined floats from local homes and clubs. Gregory Lucey represented Gov Patrick Lucey, while Miss La Crescent Karen Bennett rode a Minnesota apple float. Other participants included Miss Oktoberfest and Festmaster Hammond atop a large float, plus Princess Kay of the Milky Way and local bands and clowns delighting the crowd.

Ernest Korpela of Washburn won the Democratic Youth Caucus endorsement for state superintendent in the April 3 election. He defeated Dr. Barbara Thompson 124 to 32 with nine abstentions as delegates debated teacher unions and strikes. Korpela urged local control of districts with state funding and federal support for education while Thompson argued strikes harm students and urged more input on curriculum.
