Paris AP reports workers label the French state a bad boss and launch strikes to stall the booming economy. Coal miners, railway workers and Paris transit staff threaten prolonged walkouts as wage gaps and cost of living erode pay. A commission heads to study wage comparisons, but results may take days.
In San Jose authorities launch Operation Kennedy with heightened security for President Kennedy and six Central American chiefs. U S planes and helicopters from the carrier Wasp patrol coasts as heavily armed guards guard bridges power plants reservoirs and the hotels and buildings where leaders will stay.
Algeria warns France plans new Sahara atomic explosion and recalls its ambassador for consultations. Premier Ahmed Ben Bella’s government opposes nuclear tests on Algerian land, signaling possible full rupture if Paris proceeds. Paris offers no official comment on the move amid Evian-era test rights dispute.

Max Conrad 61 year old ferry pilot lifts from San Francisco in a two engined Piper Aztec B on a four stage voyage toward Brisbane Australia aiming for Honolulu 2400 miles away in about 14 hours 15 minutes thunderstorms hover but drift south. He plans to deliver the plane to a Brisbane dealer and has crossed the Pacific 19 times and the Atlantic 99 times. He hopes to reach his 100th Atlantic crossing soon and seeks a new activity afterward.
Whitehall Wisconsin Clifford Sluga age about 62 of Independence died after being struck by a car on Highway 121 west of Whitehall at 6 50 p m He was hit by Marcel R Sura 26 also of Independence driving west Sluga walked on the left side of the highway and was killed instantly Sura said he did not see him in time No charges have been filed and an inquest was not yet known Traffic Officer Maurice Scow assisted Kern Funeral Home in Independence prepared the body Sluga was unmarried and funeral arrangements are pending
