Marguerite Oswald told reporters she would have preferred Ruby receive life imprisonment without parole instead of the electric chair. She said she believes Ruby was paid to kill Lee Harvey Oswald and that Tippit was killed to implicate her son.
Jack Ruby, 52, was found guilty of murder with malice for the November 24 shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald near the Dallas courthouse. The verdict came in two hours and nineteen minutes from a jury of four women and eight men. Ruby rejected a temporary insanity defense. defense attorney Melvin Belli denounced the verdict as bigotry and vowed to appeal.
Sugar maple sap flows from the William Haugh farm near La Farge as 40 year veteran Haugh and his nephew Ben guide the tapping. Washington AP reports a strong chance of a nationwide rail strike next week as five unions and about 200 railroads wage protracted negotiations. unions threaten to strike Southern Pacific and Louisville & Nashville if no separate bargaining, with broader work rule changes considered across major lines.
Nellie the calf failed to win Auction Days Queen on the Rockford College campus as Terri Mayer of Cedar Rapids won. Backers from Nelson Hall raised 27.74 while Men Town Students raised 44.40 to overtake Nellie before the coronation.
Finland and Sweden announced they would send troops to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus, narrowing the force gap to about 1 000. Canada had begun contributing 1 150 with Ireland pledging 500 pending approval. A Brazilian general arrived as acting commander while awaiting word from Austria and Brazil on further commitments.
An AMC official said the firm will begin producing Typhoon bodies at its Milwaukee plant with final assembly at Kenosha. The Typhoon, a two door hardtop with a six cylinder engine, will be slightly more expensive than the Classic.
