John Gould faced homicide by reckless conduct charges in the February 23 death of 17 year old Sherrie Rae Hahn in Hartford Wisconsin. Authorities say Gould allowed his horse to roam and caused the crash on Wisconsin 60 west of Hartford.
Federal roadblocks around Wounded Knee in South Dakota were removed as AIM leaders said they would stay in the village to press charges of tribal abuses. Justice officials cited progress toward a peaceful resolution while indicating indictments may follow against some Indians occupying the village.
Washington AP reports only about one third of draft evaders prosecuted in federal court are convicted and most convicted are placed on probation. Many indicted evade arraignment by accepting induction into the armed forces for two years.
Wisconsin Child Center workers plan to oppose Governor Lucey’s bid to close the facility. They will bus to the Green Bay reformatory on March 19 to challenge the governor during his visit and attend a Madison board meeting over the staff report supporting closing. The board has not accepted the phased closure, while Rep. Dennis Conta says the report backs the cost-cutting proposal, citing $32,000 per child and a potential $3.2 million two year saving.
