80 Year Old Man Fights Holdup, Wounds Thief in Newark

An 80 year old Newark man fought off a holdup, punched the intruder and fired a .38 caliber revolver, wounding the assailant and sending police on a blood trail to a suspect. Brown described the struggle and the warnings given before the shooting.

Protest Discrimination Sparks White Jeers in Selma

In Selma Alabama about 60 whites jeered pro Negro rights protesters as Gov George Wallace announced troopers would halt a 50 mile march to Montgomery. The white group Concerned White Citizens of Alabama led by Rev Joseph Ellwanger read a statement at Dallas County Courthouse while about 900 Negro supporters rallied nearby for the vote effort.

Marines to bolster Da Nang security in Vietnam

The Defense Department says about 3,500 U.S. Marines will be sent from Pacific units to the Da Nang area in South Vietnam. The mission aims to relieve South Vietnamese forces on security duties and support pacification and offensive efforts. The addition brings U.S. forces in Vietnam to roughly 27,000, with Da Nang viewed as a potential Viet Cong mortar target.

Prairie du Chien Native Ida Swingle Dies at 102

Ida Swingle 102 of Prairie du Chien died Friday night and will be buried in Evergreen Cemetery after services at First Methodist Church. Born Ida Oelschlager in 1863, she lived through the city's transformation from wagon days to modern times and was tied to the Louis Dousman home. She is survived by two sons Daniel and Lawrence, a daughter Ethel Herreid, seven grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Her husband William Swingle died earlier.

West Allis jeweler trapped by flood near Manitowoc cabin

H. P. Shallow, a 57 year old West Allis jeweler, spent nearly a week trapped by floodwaters at a cabin on the West Twin River near Manitowoc. He said he was lonely and scared yet not in danger as ice chunks threatened the cabin. Friends reached him and brought in a bulldozer to free his car and clear the road for his exit.

Onalaska and Shelby See Rising Primary Registrations

Onalaska reports 1 536 registered for the March primary while Shelby totals 3 044. City Clerk Harold Johnson and Voter Registrar Dorothy Ristow note 1963 counts were 1 388 and 2 624 respectively. Ward by ward Onalaska 1965 tallies show 526 496 and 514 in Wards 1 2 and 3 with 462 456 and 470 previously. Shelby and Onalaska voters will participate in the statewide primary for Supreme Court Justice. Onalaska also fields primaries for 1st Ward alderman and 3rd Ward supervisor.

Neenah Man Fatally Burned In Fire

Arthur Christian aged 62 of rural Neenah died after flames set by a cigarette burned 93 percent of his body. His brother Walter suffered burns on hands and face while trying to help and was in satisfactory condition in hospital.
