Lutherans Commit Up to 1.79 Million for Urban Programs
The American Lutheran Church Joint Council voted to allocate 1.5 to 1.79 million dollars for urban programs from projected fund drives. Black leaders had pressed for 5 million as the church's share of a 500 million white church demand. The council kept plans for 27 new congregations in 1970 and aimed to boost urban funding beyond 3 million with other budgets. Dr. Fredrik A. Schiotz called Forman's demands an alarm clock.
