Milwaukee lawyer Elliott Walstead weighs a Senate bid amid pressure from party leaders and delegates at the Dane County slate. He would face Henry Maier if he runs, with canvass results shaping a likely convention decision before adjournment.
United States Chamber of Commerce chief economist Dr Emerson P Schmidt forecast 1956 would be the biggest year and prosperity should carry into 1957 even if President Eisenhower does not seek re election. Executives from 14 trade associations plus one banker reported optimism for 1956 growth though car dealers faced a grim outlook. Union Trust Co official Justin Bowersock warned of a forthcoming need for a stimulus to avoid a recession.

Wisconsin will construct five bridges in District 5 using pre stressed concrete girders. The Romance Bridge on STH 56 east of Genoa will be 353 feet in five spans. Trempealeau River spans on STH 35 total 616 feet in two structures. Two Mississippi River spans on STH 25 will be 1126 feet combined in eight spans.
Panamanian Ambassador J J Vallarino announced that the inter American conference in Panama will be postponed indefinitely. The meeting of American presidents was originally set for June 25 26 and follows the expressed will of a majority of the 21 American republics due to President Eisenhower illness.
Senate leader Kefauver told Wisconsin Democrats the party must face up to full civil rights for all citizens and push a clear stance at the national convention. He warned of conflicts between New Dealers and Southern conservatives and criticized Republican leadership on foreign and domestic affairs.
The Badger Regional Bloodmobile will be at Dairyland Power Cooperative in La Crosse from Wednesday to Friday to serve Trane Co employees and local workers. Public registration is encouraged with hours 1 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Nine Trane employees registered Friday. The Wisconsin Democratic convention in Superior chose Herman Jessen from Phelps and Mrs. Betty Graichen of Coloma as national committeeman and committeewoman respectively, replacing Carl Thompson and Edna Bowen who were defeated. Harold Newton was runner up for committeeman. Labor groups influenced the vote amid Stevenson campaign support.
The Coulee Crosswords No. 59 drew 10 041 entries with no winner marking the fifth highest list for The La Crosse Tribune. No. 17 in Aug 1955 had the greatest response. No. 60 is expected to set a new record as prize climbs to 525 dollars. Only 906 of the past week’s entries passed keyword tests, none solving the master copy kept at First National Bank La Crosse.
Eight Koreans were killed when a South Korean Mustang fighter crashed into three houses in Taegu. Police said a midair collision of two Mustang fighters caused the crash over the southern city. The pilot bailed out with serious injuries. the second plane sustained major damage.
About 11 000 members of Wisconsin 32nd National Guard Division moved into Camp McCoy on Saturday for a two week summer encampment. Guardsmen from 70 communities arrived by military and commercial buses. Brigadier General Walde mar Breidster will direct training after church services. Maj. Gen. Jim Dan Hill will visit other division elements during the two weeks.
Charley Grimm resigned as Milwaukee Braves manager after a 3-2 loss to Brooklyn. Fred Haney, hired earlier this season, will helm the club for the remainder of the year. Grimm considers a personnel post and may join the Cubs. rumors link Leo Durocher to Milwaukee next season.
In Nicosia a bomb attack at the Little Soho restaurant killed U S Vice Consul William Boteler and wounded six others. Boteler, a Washington D C resident, died after being rushed to a British military hospital. The blast occurred amid heightened violence linked to the union with Greece, with EOKA militants long suspected.
