Woman Sniper Wounds Two Nuns in Convent

A 20 year old woman sniper fired from a third floor apartment in Columbus wounding Sister Mary Leonard 33 and Sister Ricardo 24 in a courtyard near St Francis of Assisi Convent. Janet Marie LaZarrus was identified as the shooter. no charges filed immediately.

La Crosse sees 1967 as third best year for construction

La Crosse city and rural areas posted a combined 1967 construction total of $12.68 million in the city and $4.32 million in rural La Crosse County. Major projects included Grandview Hospital additions, a YMCA YMCA YWCA, and Viterbo College plans, with public and educational building driving the year. City Hall and School Projects Shaping La Crosse Civic Center 1968

The Civic Center plans a 1968 capital program including a new city hall, a Coleman Technical Institute building, street and utility upgrades, Ward Avenue resurfacing, and La Crosse Airport runway extension. The proposed city hall on 4th Street between Badger and La Crosse will cost about 2.8 million to design and build, with 112 330 square feet and an underground garage, aiming for completion by January 1, 1970.

Arthritis May Limit Dr. Barnard's Career

New York AP reports that Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the first surgeon to transplant a human heart, says rheumatoid arthritis in his hands may end or limit his surgical career. In a Capetown interview aired by NBC, the 44 year old described ongoing joint swelling and pain after operations, noting he may not continue surgery much past age 60.

Fire Destroys Farmhouse In North Chipmunk

A two story farmhouse owned by Armin Bender on R 1 Stoddard in North Chipmunk Coulee burned after the family were in the barn. Firefighters battled in 12 below zero to keep the blaze from a nearby barn. No injuries were reported and the fire likely started near the chimney.

UW Professor Killed In 1 Car Accident

Michael Dreves 27, an assistant professor in the UW School of Music, died in a single vehicle crash on a Dane County town line road east of Oregon. The car left the road, struck a tree, and burst into flames. Dreves was alone.
